Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Contour 20i is a 4 ohms speaker compared to the Kanta No.1 which has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. Lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit especially when played at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Contour 20i can provide this impedance level.

These two speakers also have different sensitivity levels. Contour 20i sensitivity is rated at 86 dB and the Kanta No.1's is rated at 88 dB. This 2 dB difference makes the Focal Kanta No.1 a more sensitive speaker compared to Dynaudio Contour 20i, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Cabinet Type and Port Position

Both Contour 20i and Kanta No.1 have rear firing ports. Rear ported speakers generally need more room between the backside of the speaker and the wall compared to sealed and front/bottom ported speakers. Placing the speakers too close to the walls may cause the bass to sound boomy.

If you are limited in space and can't get the speakers away from the backwall, check our Speakers with Front Firing Ports page.

Verdict

No single best speaker here - they are built to different priorities, and the right one depends on your room, your amplifier and what you listen to.

AreaBetterWhy
BassADynaudio Contour 20i digs deeper - 39Hz against 46Hz. A subwoofer would even that out.
Amplifier needsBFocal Kanta No.1 is more sensitive (88dB vs 86dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier.
Amplifier matchBFocal Kanta No.1 is the easier load at 8 ohms; the other is 4 ohms and wants an amplifier rated for it.
Headroomevenly matchedSimilar power handling (180W vs 150W).
SizedependsDynaudio Contour 20i is easier to place; Focal Kanta No.1 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
PriceADynaudio Contour 20i is cheaper - $5,750 against $7,998, about 28% less.

A Dynaudio Contour 20i  B Focal Kanta No.1
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Focal Kanta No.1 is ahead, but only on 1 of the measured areas, and it costs about 39% more. That is a lot of money for a narrow margin on paper - Dynaudio Contour 20i looks like the sensible buy unless something else about the Focal Kanta No.1 appeals to you. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 46Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. Match it to your room: we rate Dynaudio Contour 20i the better fit for near-field listening and a small room, and Focal Kanta No.1 for a mid-size room and a large room.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
