Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Alteco C-1 is a 6 ohms speaker compared to the Q8 Meta which has a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. Lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit especially when played at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Q8 Meta can provide this impedance level.

These two speakers also have different sensitivity levels. Alteco C-1 sensitivity is rated at 83 dB and the Q8 Meta's is rated at 86 dB. This 3 dB difference makes the KEF Q8 Meta a more sensitive speaker compared to DALI Alteco C-1, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Verdict

A generation apart: KEF Q8 Meta is the newer design, against a 2017 model. Newer is not automatically better, but the older one is more likely to be discounted or near run-out.

AreaBetterWhy
BassADALI Alteco C-1 digs deeper - 74Hz against 105Hz.
Amplifier needsBKEF Q8 Meta is more sensitive (86dB vs 83dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier.
Amplifier matchADALI Alteco C-1 is the easier load at 6 ohms; the other is 4 ohms and wants an amplifier rated for it.
SizedependsSimilar cabinet size - neither is easier to fit.
CabinetdependsPorted vs Sealed. Sealed is tighter and happier near a wall; ported digs lower but wants space behind it.
ExpandabilitydependsNeither adds bi-amping, a sub output or height drivers. KEF Q8 Meta sits in a wider range (8 models), so a matched surround system is easier later.
Priceevenly matchedMuch the same money ($900 vs $900 a pair).

A DALI Alteco C-1  B KEF Q8 Meta
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

DALI Alteco C-1 has the edge on paper, though the margin is not large. The rows marked "depends" may matter more to you than the score does. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 105Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. If your amplifier is modest, vintage or valve-based, KEF Q8 Meta is the safer partner - the other will want more current or more watts to sound its best.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
