Low Frequency
Bookshelf Speakers
Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

In this section, we are going to compare Audioengine HD4's and Audioengine A5+'s external dimensions. Audioengine HD4 has external dimensions of 231.8 x 138.1 x 225.4mm (9.125 x 5.4375 x 8.875inch) whereas Audioengine A5+ has external dimensions of 276.2 x 182.6 x 247.6mm (10.875 x 7.1888 x 9.75inch).

Size, drawn to scale
Both speakers and both views share one scale, so everything here is directly comparable. Hover a box for its dimensions.
One scale for both, standing on the same surface and pushed back to the same wall, so the deeper one visibly sticks out further.
Audioengine A5+ needs about 45% more floor or shelf area. Audioengine A5+ is 22mm deeper, so it stands that much further out from the wall. Audioengine A5+ is 44mm taller.

A generation apart: Audioengine HD4 is the newer design, against a 2011 model. Newer is not automatically better, but the older one is more likely to be discounted or near run-out.
| Area | Better | Why |
|---|
| Bass | B | Audioengine A5+ digs deeper - 50Hz against 60Hz. |
| Built-in power | evenly matched | Similar onboard amplification (60W vs 50W RMS). |
| Connections | A | Audioengine HD4 adds Bluetooth. |
| Size | depends | Audioengine HD4 is easier to place; Audioengine A5+ is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides. |
| Expandability | depends | Audioengine HD4: a sub output; Audioengine A5+: a sub output. Audioengine A5+ sits in a wider range (7 models), so a matched surround system is easier later. |
| Price | B | Audioengine A5+ is cheaper - $399 against $449, about 11% less. |
A Audioengine HD4 B Audioengine A5+
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.
Which should you choose?
Neither runs away with it - they trade advantages. Let the "depends" rows and your own room settle it. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 60Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. In a large or open-plan room, Audioengine A5+ has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, Audioengine HD4 is the easier speaker to get right.
And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
