Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that SCM11 is a 2-way design whereas the R3 is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

SCM11 features a 0.98" Tweeter and 1 x 5.91" Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2.2kHz. On the other hand, the R3 features a 1" aluminum Dome Tweeter, a 5" Midrange and 1 x 6.5" Hybrid aluminum Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 400Hz and 2900Hz.

Frequency Response

SCM11 has a frequency range of 56-22k Hz whereas R3 has a frequency range of 52-28k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 52Hz, the R3 can go slightly deeper then the SCM11's min frequency of 56Hz.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. Impedance and Sensitivity

SCM11 and R3 have the same Impedance of 8 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. SCM11 sensitivity is rated at 85 dB and the R3's is at 87 dB. This 2 dB difference makes the KEF R3 a more sensitive speaker compared to ATC SCM11, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

R3 can handle a max power of 180 watts RMS, whereas SCM11 has a max power handling value of watts RMS, 180 watts less than the R3.

Verdict

A generation apart: ATC SCM11 is the newer design, against a 2018 model. Newer is not automatically better, but the older one is more likely to be discounted or near run-out.

KEF R3 is the easier recommendation: it leads on most of the measured areas and costs less. Take ATC SCM11 if its size, looks or fit in your room suit you better. Match it to your room: we rate ATC SCM11 the better fit for near-field listening and a small room, and KEF R3 for a mid-size room and a large room. If your amplifier is modest, vintage or valve-based, KEF R3 is the safer partner - the other will want more current or more watts to sound its best.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
