The main difference between these two speakers is that the ATC SCM50ASLT is a Powered speaker which means that it has a built-in amplifier inside the speaker body so you don't need an external power amp or an integrated amp whereas the ATC SCM100PSL is a Passive speaker so has to be matched with an amplifier to get any sound from it.

Let's have a brief look at the main features of ATC SCM100PSL and ATC SCM50ASLT first before getting into our more detailed comparison.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

SCM100PSL and SCM50ASLT have the same Impedance of 8 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. SCM100PSL sensitivity is rated at 88 dB and the SCM50ASLT's is at 85 dB. This 3 dB difference makes the ATC SCM100PSL a more sensitive speaker compared to ATC SCM50ASLT, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

SCM100PSL and SCM50ASLT have the same power range of 100 to 1500 Watts watts.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Input Type and Bi-Amping / Bi-Wiring

SCM100PSL features Female XLR type posts and SCM50ASLT has a Female XLR type posts. None of these speakers feature bi-amping/bi-wiring.

Physical Specs

The size of a speaker can sometimes be an important decision factor due to space constraints or in some cases purely for esthetic reasons. Verdict

Different kinds of product: one is active with its amplifier built in, the other passive and needs one. Judge them on how you want to own the system, not just the specs.

AreaBetterWhy
BassAATC SCM100PSL digs deeper - 65Hz against 70Hz. A subwoofer would even that out.
What you buydependsATC SCM50ASLT is a complete system - just add a source. ATC SCM100PSL also needs an amplifier: more money and another box, but you choose it.
ConnectionsdependsWith ATC SCM100PSL that all comes from the amplifier you pair it with.
Upgrade pathdependsATC SCM100PSL can be re-amped later and outlive several amplifiers; ATC SCM50ASLT ages as one unit.
SizedependsSimilar cabinet size - neither is easier to fit.
Priceevenly matchedMuch the same money ($26,999 vs $26,999 a pair) - though the passive pair still needs an amplifier.

A ATC SCM100PSL  B ATC SCM50ASLT
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

ATC SCM50ASLT suits you if you want one box, ready to play, with nothing else to buy. ATC SCM100PSL suits you if you already have an amplifier, want to choose the electronics, or expect to upgrade in stages. Neither is the better speaker in the abstract. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 70Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
