Cambridge Audio L R X vs KEF Q Concerto Meta Speaker Comparison

In this review, we will be comparing L R X and Q Concerto Meta, two Bookshelf speakers from Cambridge Audio and KEF. The main difference between these two speakers is that the Cambridge Audio L R X is a Powered speaker which means that it has a built-in amplifier inside the speaker body so you don't need an external power amp or an integrated amp whereas the KEF Q Concerto Meta is a Passive speaker so has to be matched with an amplifier to get any sound from it.

Let's have a brief look at the main features of Cambridge Audio L R X and KEF Q Concerto Meta first before getting into our more detailed comparison.

The sections below take each area in turn: drivers, frequency response, physical size and what you get in the box.

Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that L R X is a 2-way design whereas the Q Concerto Meta is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

Verdict

Different kinds of product: one is active with its amplifier built in, the other passive and needs one. Judge them on how you want to own the system, not just the specs.

AreaBetterWhy
BassACambridge Audio L R X digs deeper - 35Hz against 48Hz.
What you buydependsCambridge Audio L R X is a complete system - just add a source. KEF Q Concerto Meta also needs an amplifier: more money and another box, but you choose it.
ConnectionsdependsCambridge Audio L R X has HDMI built in. With KEF Q Concerto Meta that all comes from the amplifier you pair it with.
Upgrade pathdependsKEF Q Concerto Meta can be re-amped later and outlive several amplifiers; Cambridge Audio L R X ages as one unit.
SizedependsCambridge Audio L R X is easier to place; KEF Q Concerto Meta is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
CabinetdependsPassive Radiator vs Ported.
PriceBKEF Q Concerto Meta is cheaper - $1,300 against $2,299, about 43% less; arguably a different class. Speakers only - an amplifier narrows that gap.

A Cambridge Audio L R X  B KEF Q Concerto Meta
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Cambridge Audio L R X suits you if you want one box, ready to play, with nothing else to buy. KEF Q Concerto Meta suits you if you already have an amplifier, want to choose the electronics, or expect to upgrade in stages. Neither is the better speaker in the abstract. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 48Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper KEF Q Concerto Meta much easier to justify. Think about the whole system, not just the speakers: the roughly $999 saved by taking the cheaper pair would buy a subwoofer or a better amplifier, and either usually does more for the sound than the difference between these two.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
